Lighting structure and components

Each skylight, depending on the type of design and function, includes the following main components: 1. Frame: usually made of aluminum, fiberglass or PVC to ensure light weight and corrosion resistance. 

2. Dome / Glazing: It is designed from double-walled polycarbonate, tempered glass or transparent U-PVC to provide both light transmission and thermal insulation. 

3. Insulation and gaskets: they are responsible for preventing water and dust penetration. 

4. Ventilation or opening system (in smart skylights): in electric or manual models, it provides the possibility of air conditioning.

Standards and technical requirements In the design and installation of skylights, compliance with the following national and international standards is mandatory:

ISIRI 7175: General specifications for windows and weather sealing. 

ISIRI 8593: Characteristics of toughened and laminated safety glasses. 

EN 14351-1: Performance of doors and windows in terms of water, air and thermal resistance. 

ASTM E283 / E331: Air and water penetration test in skylight structures.

Executive tips in projects

1. The orientation of the skylight should be designed based on the path of the sun (south-southeast angle). 

2. For sandwich panel or composite roofs, special waterproof frames are used. 

3. In areas with high rainfall, drainage slope and use of EPDM gasket is necessary. 

4. The use of anti-UV polycarbonate is recommended for more durability of the surface.
